We are right there with you wondering if it's okay to plant yet...frustrating! How to know is more than air temperatures. The life of the plant is in the roots. You have to make sure your soil temperature is high enough. Three days ago, soil temps were at 42 degrees; yesterday they were 46. If we continue to have sunny days, I am pretty sure we will see soil temps above 50 by the end of the week. This means right now you can put things like radish, lettuce, spinach etc in the ground. Once soil temps get above 55, tomatoes should be ready. I'd suggest getting above 60 for peppers. If you are doing cucumbers, melons and squash, shoot for 65+ degrees. With all of this said...be sure to have a plan to cover your plants in the event air temperatures do drop below 40 on any night! If you really want to be safe, wait until Mother's Day Weekend to plant your garden. In fact, swing by our three day craft fair over Mother's Day Weekend May 11-13 to get your plants and other crafts from local artists! ...
